What a great adventure!  This was my first time ever caribou hunting and I had a blast.  Ungava Adventures runs a first rate operation.  Every detail was handled with professionalism.  The camp was wonderful (nice beds, warm oil burning stoves, hot showers) and boy is it nice to be able to dry your clothes after a day of hunting in the rain!

The Guides were tremendous.  Very hard working and they wanted to get me my caribou just as bad as I did.  I was at Lake Gordon camp and Farren, Richard and Moses were the guides, with Peggy as the cook.  The food was incredible and the guides worked their butts off.  I could not have asked for more.

While the staff at Ungava Adventures did their part, the caribou were tough to find, especially bulls and the big bulls were very scarce.  This was true for all the camps and other outfitters during the week I hunted (we talked with other hunters on the way back home).

I saw about 200 caribou during the week.  In that time, I saw 3 shooter bulls and I shot 2 of them.  I shot the biggest one on the first afternoon.  I then hunted hard for a bigger bull, but settled for a smaller one on the 2nd to last day.  The biggest bull I shot was a “medium” sized bull, according to Farren, who has seen a lot of caribou in his 25 year guiding career.  The picture insertion function of this web site is still broken, so cannot post a picture yet.

On the last day before returning back to Kuujjuaq, I hunted ptarmigan with 2 new friends I made during the week: Murray and Rob.  We had a wonderful time hunting ptarmigan together and Rob and I each limited out with 10 birds each and Murray with 7 (had we wanted to hunt longer, getting limits for all 3 of us would have been no problem).  I shot the birds on the wing, but a few of them took some chasing to get them to fly.  It was a wonderful way to end the hunt and I’m glad I shot a smaller bull the day before to allow me to spend some time hunting these magnificent, beautiful birds.

Finally, I went on this trip as a single hunter.  The guys I met in camp: Matt, Tom, Murray, Rob, John, Peter and Tim were as nice a bunch of guys as you could ever want to spend a week hunting with.  I truly enjoyed my time getting to know them and hearing their stories at the end of each day.

Would I go back again?  In a heart beat!  I’m almost glad I didn’t bag a trophy, as it gives me an excuse to return again some day.  Can’t wait!

Saw this new feature on the Ungava-Adventures web site and thought I'd give it a try.

I've got a hunt booked this fall for September 19 - 25th.  I've got most of my packing done already.   Since I'm taking both a rifle and a shotgun (for Ptarmigan), the guns and hard case consume a considerable amount of my 70lb weight limit (almost 40lbs worth).  So, I'm keeping the excess clothes to an absolute minimum.

I've been working up a load this summer for my 300 WBY Magnum.  I've got 86.5gr of IMR7828 pushing a 150gr Barnes TTSX bullet at 3300fps.  The round groups pretty well at about MOA.  I tried to insert a picture of my target here, but the "Image" feature of this site doesn't seem to be working right now.

I'll post a follow up article (and hopefully some pictures) when the hunt is over.
