Answers to the most popular questions
Why Hunt The North Ungava Region?
Three excellent reasons:
- The massive expansion of the Quebec Labrador Caribou in recent years has brought drastic changes to their traditional migratory patterns. The animals now move further north, closer to the shores of Ungava Bay. At the peak of the massing, close to half a million caribou use the Koksoak-Leaf River massing area.
- Exclusive territories (Native Controlled Lands) means less hunter traffic which translates into more and bigger bulls for select hunters.
- Same day access by 727 jet from Montreal to Fort Chimo in less than 2 hours means you hunt from day one.
Why Do Rates Vary?
Price variations reflect a number of crucial factors including the quality of the outfitters equipment, the level of services provided, and most of all his hunting territories. When hunting is difficult the outfitter should have facilities, equipment and experience to provide alternative arrangements. You only get what you pay for continues to prove itself right.

"If you want a trophy Quebec caribou, but you've heard too many horror stories, you can forget them: Ungava Adventures delivers on its promise." Terry Wieland, "Tuktu Magic", |
What Are The Prospects Of Bow hunting?
Bow hunting for caribou can offer multiple opportunities versus hunting other big game such as elk or moose where only a one shot opportunity might be expected. On the other hand, bow-hunting conditions in the Arctic due to limited cover requires a different approach, attitude and most of all flexibility on the part of the hunter to assure success.
Our references from past clients include some of the most respected individuals in the World of Bow hunting - Chuck Adams, the late Fred Bear and Glen St. Charles (Founder of the Pope & Young Records).
How And When Should I Book?
Due to our relatively short season, occupancy is limited. Individuals or groups wishing to secure particular dates should make reservations as early as possible. We will hold reservations for a maximum of 10 days until deposits representing 30% of package rates are forwarded to our office.
A letter of confirmation and a trip preparation information sheet will provide you with details including a recommended list of equipment for your selected trip. Our office will handle all arrangements and provide you with a complete itinerary of your trip.
Do I really need a guide?
First, keep in mind that no matter which package you decide to select the fundamentals will be provided. Somewhat like a cruise ship there is one destination. Nevertheless, you get what you pay for. When the caribou are plentiful the playing field is fairly level. When the caribou are not cooperating a good guide and all the additional support systems frequently, but not always, make the difference. If you still have difficulty deciding give us a call. We understand that budgets, time and numerous other factors may influence your choice. Rest assured if we cannot satisfy your needs we will tell you up front!

"I have heard plenty of horror stories about Quebec caribou bow hunts gone sour - no animals, small bulls, bad food, poor camps, knucklehead guides, etc. But I have hunted with Sammy three years in a row, and his setups are all first-rate." Chuck Adams, "Caribou Heaven", |
Bringing Firearms Into Canada

NOT A PROBLEM! These days mention guns and registration in the same sentence and you are sure to create mass hysteria. The fact remains that we host hundreds of American hunters each year and experience no difficulties. Like your camcorder, or car for that matter, the object of Canadian Gun Laws is to insure that you leave the country with the same rifle or shotgun you entered with. Period! This means that you have proof of ownership for each gun.
Non-resident minors (under 18 years of age) are not allowed to apply for any Canadian firearms licences, including the minors’ licence. However, youths, 12 years and older, can hunt if accompanied by an adult. For anyone under 18 it is best to register the youth's gun in the name of an adult member of the party.
All too frequently the problem is not the gun laws as such but the anti-hunters in a minor position of authority. Click Visitors to Canada (the Federal Government's Canadian Firearms Center) for more information.
Note that handguns cannot be brought into Canada.

"Without doubt, Quebec-Labrador caribou and the Ungava region of northern Quebec offer hunters the best chances at record-book animals of the entire North American continent." Lloyd Bare, "Drop Camp Caribou", |
Are there any other activities?
Great fishing is possible during the early season (prior to September 07) for lake and brook trout and the occasional Arctic char. A bear is always a possibility and permits are made available at all camps. Small game hunting is available for our Arctic partridge - the ptarmigan.
Are Quebec Labrador Caribou easy to hunt?
Not always! There are in excess of a million caribou but they cover an area of over 400,000 square miles in small groups - that's less than two caribou per square mile if their distribution pattern was even - it is not.
While caribou on occasion literally surround our camps the hunter must be prepared to make an effort and hunt. This is not a Canned Hunt. Ungava Adventures has the know-how, experience, and equipment to make your hunt a success. The bottom line remains you must hunt the window of opportunity we provide which is subject to weather, migratory patterns and a host of other factors. But then isn't that what hunting is all about?
When is the best time to hunt caribou?
Normally caribou will be present from early August to early October within our network of hunting camps. Selection of dates is much more a matter of personnel preference and to some extent the type of weapon the hunter is planning to use. For example: We may recommend a bow hunter to select early dates when weather conditions are more favorable and the caribou are moving slow and steady. A hunter looking to take a hard horn bull may wish to hunt the late season with a rifle. On the other hand a mid season hunt is a compromise of caribou just coming out of velvet and still very good weather. Give us a call anytime and we would be glad to review your interests and offer recommendations as to possible dates.
What Is Your Success Rate?
The short answer is close to 100% shooting opportunity but outfitting like hunting itself is an art and not a science. Take away the spirit of fair chase and you eliminate the very nature of the sport. Outfitters are like lawyers and doctors - the very best have proven track records and only the foolish would gamble with an inexperienced or part time practitioner. Ungava Adventures has over 30 years of solid reputation and commands the respect of the professional hunting fraternity. Take the time to contact some of our past references and check the record books.

Do You Guarantee Trophies?
Even with success rates ranging close to 100%, Ungava Adventures, as a responsible outfitter and in the spirit of fair chase - does not guarantee game. Weather, caribou migration, hunter experience are just a few of the elements that are beyond our control.
There are only two things in life that are truly 100% guaranteed – death and taxes. In our humble opinion and longtime experience in outfitting - guarantees that may be offered today are generally questionable offers of partial refunds, return trips plus expenses, etc, with many exclusions, exceptions and very fine print! Don’t allow this word in any form or matter over shadow your better judgment! Are you looking for a guarantee to be forced to shoot the first mature scrub bull you see or are you really looking for an outfitter who will do his very best to provide you with as much opportunity as possible to select your caribou of choice?

"Because your success is dependent on the whims of the caribou which do not always follow the same migration routes, we have a number of alternate sites to provide additional mobility for our hunts." Sammy Cantafio, "Ungava Adventures" Click Telling It As It Is for the plain truth about caribou hunting. |
How Do We Judge Caribou?
Caribou racks are the most complex trophies to score. Furthermore, like snowflakes, no two are exactly alike. Look first for a rack with many points, each point scores a point. Look for especially long top points and good palmation on top. Next look for main beams that run 50 inches or more around the outer curve. Look for racks that curve outwards and up when viewed from the front rather than going up in a V. Double shovels are beautiful and do add some to the scoring but they are not nearly as important as good tops and good length. You may see many bulls with excellent tops and many others with excellent bottoms. However, you want the bull with both top and bottom scoring well. On the average, a top-heavy bull will over score most others.

"This was a top-drawer hunt with a first class outfitter. Sammy goes overboard for his clients; his attention to detail makes the difference between a good hunt and a great hunt. I understand why Sammy Cantafio puts his name on his product." Jeff Young, "Bachelor Bulls of Ungava", Petersen Hunting Magazine |
