Caribou Hunting in Northern Quebec Print E-mail

Our Quebec Labrador caribou hunting camps are located 1000 miles north of Montreal in Nunavik, Quebec. The village of Kuujjuaq (previously called Fort Chimo) is our base of operations during the hunting season from mid-August to early October.

Contrary to travel to other northern destinations, access to our region is simple, quick and civilized. Daily 727 jet transportation from the cosmopolitan city of Montreal is provided on a daily basis to the community of Kuujjuaq in under 2 hours. From Kuujjuaq our chartered Twin Otter wheeled aircraft assures a timely arrival in camp. Under 3 hours after leaving Montreal – you will be hunting!

At last count, the population of Quebec Labrador caribou was estimated at over one million and growing. It is generally accepted among the experts that two different herds exist – the George River Herd and the Leaf River Herd. While there are slight differences in migrational patterns for each herd – on occasion they will join into one unit particularly in the Fall in a location just South of Kuujjuaq.

Due to the high population of caribou in recent years – Quebec permits hunters to harvest two caribou of any sex under one license fee of approximately $300. In recent years other caribou subspecies have experience major declines in numbers that have unfortunately restricted and reduced hunting opportunity particularly in the Northwest. At present, the caribou hunting opportunities in Northern Quebec surpasses all other caribou hunting destinations in terms of numbers of animals, hunter opportunity and value for cost!

A caribou hunting trip to Northern Quebec is more than just a hunt – it is an overall adventure to experience the land, the scenery and its people. Hunt for caribou with rifle, with bow or both, take time to fish and catch and release a 5 lbs. brook trout on some quiet stretch of river, what about seeking a covey of white ptarmigan on the open tundra with your favorite shotgun. And what about waking up in the middle of the night to experience the spectacle of the Northern Lights. Ungava Adventures can provide you with this and more!
