5:00 PM Wednesday August 30, 2011 Kuujjuaq, Quebec. Our guides at camp are literally reporting tons of caribou coming from the West and travelling directly East with many good bulls in big bunches. A review of the recent satellite maps of caribou migrations will show the direction that the herds have taken – strait to our region. We are expecting the caribou to travel to the coast and the herd should break up on hitting the ocean and start circulating back and forth in smaller groups through the gauntlet – our camps. Things are shaping up great so far this season and I wish we had more tags and more hunters – what a great opportunity to see some serious caribou numbers.
Duncan Sinclair heading his party of 9 is coming out tomorrow from North Camp and reports from Peter Wellman, my manager; indicate the boys had one heck of a week. They all tagged out on big bull in three days and spend the rest of the week shooting ptarmigan and sampling the great char fishing and Pete’s famous shore lunches. This was the third caribou trip for this group and the first time seeing the caribou and the first time hunting with us. It might of taken them two years to get this trip organized but from what I hear the boys are not going to wait two years to get back to North Camp - they have already planned to return in exactly 12 months – good for them and why not life is not forever now’s the time for them to enjoy themselves. We just closed our Helen’s Falls Fishing Camp for the season and Jean Guy our mechanic reported seeing many salmon still coming in. Water levels went up bringing in some big male salmon averaging 14 to 18 pounds – wish I was there. Time for supper with fresh Arctic Char on the menu. All the Best, Sammy Cantafio |
